About the project: Built in 2019 by a local company, WR Sandow and installed by AS Sports systems, the artificial grass rugby pitch in Truro features the Superb EX2 60PU surface, onto an Alveo shock pad. The pitch was to endure heavy use, by England, Exeter and British and Irish Lions players, so needed to be a pitch built to last.
About the surface: Superb EX2 is made from a combination of two yarns. The main fibre is the Superb yarn with its strong diamond shape, which balances durability and resilience with a player-friendly soft feel. This is supported by a “thatch” yarn, which is curly and acts like the roots of real grass. The yarn has been heavily Lisport tested to 500,000 cycles and is guaranteed for 12 years.
About the system: The system consists of an unbound stone base, which helps provide better energy distribution, whilst the 16mm foam pad deals with the safety and extra absorption needed when playing rugby. On top of this, the Superb EX2 60 turf, uses the curly “thatch” fibres, to help stabilize the sand and rubber infill, providing a firm grip for players to push and run on.
